~Oscar Wild; STACK April 2012

There is perhaps no name more synonymous with ‘Academy Awards’ than Martin Scorsese. In 38 years of feature filmmaking, his movies have racked up an impressive 75 Academy Award Nominations.

2012 was no different; his 3D family adventure Hugo, starring Asa Butterfield and ChloĆ« Moretz, picked up 11 nominations and walked away with 5 wins – Cinematography, Art Direction, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.

If nothing else, Hugo will be a visual extravaganza like never before when it’s released on Blu-ray and DVD on May 9.

On the other end of the visual spectrum is The Artist; Michel Hazanavicius’ homage to the great silent films of the '20s. Without dialogue and in classic monochrome, the best way to describe the film – which follows silent movie star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) and his demise as talkies become the wave of the future – is delightful.

Undoubtedly the most buzz-inspiring movie this awards season, The Artist did as film spectators expected, walking away with five golden statues – Original Score, Costume, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. The kind of film that reminds movie lovers why they adore cinema, The Artist can be added to DVD collections as of June 7.

While Jean Dujardin was picking up his first Oscar for Best Actor, Meryl Streep was showing him how the pros do it, snagging her third Academy Award for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Available on DVD and Blu-ray on April 28, the biographical film explores the life and times of the United Kingdom’s longest serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century.

For the second year running Australian Kirk Baxter and editing partner Angus Wall have taken out the award for Best Film Editing. Once again teaming up with David Fincher, this time they won the prize for their work on his adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – set for release on May 10.

Community star Jim Rash and writing partners Alexander Payne, and Nat Faxon walked away with the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Descendants (on DVD and Blu-ray May 9). The film, starring George Clooney, is based on Kaui Hart Hemmings’ novel of the same name.

Of course, don’t forget to check out the other award winners already available; Best Animated Feature, Rango; Woody Allen’s quirky Best Original Screenplay winner,Midnight in Paris; the film that finally saw Christopher Plummer take home a long overdue Supporting Actor award, Beginners; and The Help, starring Supporting Actress winner, Octavia Spencer.

Madre and I took a visit to Chapel street and Chadstone today! I'd already bought myself a birthday dress but I figured I'd go have a look what was out there and... well, this Kookai dress and I have found ourselves in a whirlwind romance. Of course, I'm going to have to do an extra 500 crunches a day to pull it off, but it is glorious and I adore it. It's funny, too, because I initially wanted a similar Sass and Bide dress but, well, they're a little out of my struggling entertainment journalist budget!

Speaking of Sass and Bide, though, saw their acid yellow 'the driving seat' jumper today. UGH. Not sure I've ever coveted a jumper so much in my life. It is spectacular. I tried to compensate not being able to afford it by buying some neon nail polish but it's just not quite as... acidy as I'd like.

Champagne taste on a beer budget. Or so they say.

I bought this today today and I'm super excited to make it my daily get-your-ass-into-gear-mate mug. I know it sounds painfully lame but honestly, just looking at it makes me that much more cheerful! Positive affirmations are a lot more kick ass than I initially gave them credit.
